Community Forest Management Program

About the Program

The Community Forest Management Program (CFMP) at the Environmental Protection and Development Association (EPDA) is designed to empower local communities in Cameroon to sustainably manage their forest resources. Recognizing that forests are vital for biodiversity, climate regulation, and the livelihoods of many communities, this program aims to promote sustainable practices that balance ecological health with the needs of local populations.

Why We Are Doing It

Why We Are Doing It
Cameroon is endowed with rich forest resources that are increasingly threatened by deforestation, illegal logging, and unsustainable land use practices. Many local communities depend on these forests for their livelihoods, yet they often lack the resources and knowledge to manage them effectively. The CFMP seeks to address these challenges by involving communities in the stewardship of their natural resources, ensuring that they have a voice in decision-making processes and access to the benefits derived from sustainable forest management.

Benefits to Communities
The benefits of the Community Forest Management Program extend beyond environmental protection. By participating in this program, communities can:

Enhance Livelihoods: Sustainable forest management creates job opportunities through eco-tourism, sustainable harvesting, and non-timber forest products, providing alternative income sources for families.
Preserve Biodiversity: Communities play a crucial role in conserving local flora and fauna, contributing to biodiversity preservation and ecosystem stability.
Strengthen Community Bonds: Collaborative management fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility, enhancing social cohesion and community identity.
Promote Environmental Education: The program includes training and workshops that educate community members about sustainable practices and the importance of forest conservation.

Objectives for Initiating the Program

Empower Local Communities: Equip community members with the knowledge and skills necessary for sustainable forest management.
Enhance Biodiversity Conservation: Implement practices that protect and restore forest ecosystems while promoting the sustainable use of resources.
Improve Economic Opportunities: Develop alternative livelihoods through eco-friendly practices, reducing reliance on unsustainable logging.
Foster Collaborative Governance: Establish frameworks for community participation in forest management decision-making processes, ensuring that local voices are heard.
Through the Community Forest Management Program, EPDA is committed to creating a sustainable future for both the forests of Cameroon and the communities that depend on them. Together, we can ensure that these vital resources are preserved for generations to come.
