Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Program
About the Program
Access to clean water and adequate sanitation is a fundamental human right, yet many Cameroonians still lack these essentials. The Environmental Protection and Development Association (EPDA) recognizes the urgent need to address this challenge through our Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) program. Our mission is to provide safe drinking water and improved sanitation facilities to underserved rural and urban communities, significantly reducing the risk of waterborne diseases and improving overall public health.
Why We Are Doing It
With a significant portion of the population lacking access to clean water and sanitation, the risk of diseases such as cholera and dysentery remains high. By implementing the WASH program, EPDA aims to combat these public health crises and enhance the quality of life for individuals and families. We collaborate closely with local communities to construct boreholes, wells, rainwater harvesting systems, and eco-friendly toilets. Additionally, we prioritize hygiene education to encourage practices such as regular handwashing, which is vital for disease prevention.
Benefits to Persons in Cameroon
The WASH program offers numerous benefits to communities in Cameroon:
Improved Health: Access to clean water and sanitation facilities reduces the incidence of waterborne diseases, leading to healthier communities.
Economic Empowerment: By alleviating health-related burdens, families can focus on income-generating activities, improving their economic situation.
Community Engagement: Local involvement in the construction and maintenance of water and sanitation facilities fosters a sense of ownership and responsibility.
Sustainability: Training community technicians ensures the longevity and sustainability of water points and sanitation facilities, further enhancing community resilience.
Objectives for Initiating the Program
Through the WASH program, EPDA is committed to transforming the lives of Cameroonians by ensuring access to clean water and sanitation, fostering healthier and more resilient communities.
Increase Access to Safe Water: Provide at least 100,000 people with access to potable water by 2025 through the construction of boreholes and wells.
Enhance Sanitation Facilities: Develop eco-friendly toilets in underserved communities to improve sanitation and hygiene practices.
Promote Hygiene Education: Implement educational campaigns focusing on hygiene practices, particularly handwashing, to reduce disease transmission.
Train Local Technicians: Equip community members with the skills to maintain water points and sanitation facilities, ensuring sustainability and reliability.
