SOCIAL CONTEXT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
________________________________________
Cameroon’s environment (biosphere, marine, and terrestrial) continues to experience deterioration from manmade causes which is detrimental to its role in supporting all forms of life especially human as well as disruption of other natural balances. The wanton exploitation of environmental resources can be interpreted as means to amass wealth by the wealthy and political class at the detriment of the poorest people and low income communities. Other causes from anthropogenic practices and changing global climate seem to be over-weighing the capacity to protect for sustainable use and benefits. The love of free environmental resources for personal interests in most communities provides the fundamental source of conflicts and despair. In order to reverse these odds, and to ensure environmental protection and stewardship, the society needs to understand how the environment functions and how all forms of life on earth depend on healthy biological network (bionetwork) to profit benefits and maintain sustainability. Human well-being and life will be sustained as long as there is long term protection of the environment and the equitable management of its resources.
EPDA and its members are committed to the responsibility of ensuring awareness of the population in order to engage in meaningful actions that build on protection and sustainable use at all times. From the point of our intervention in the environment sector as a whole, EPDA focuses its intervention on four specific program areas namely: Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Food Security (FS), Environmental Peacebuilding (EPb) and Environment and Social Economic Development (ESED). EPDA therefore brings knowledge, skills and experience to contribute to actions that shape policies and sound decision making.
EPDA promotes effectiveness in running some tailor-made sub-programs and projects such as talk environment with action (TEA), nature interpretation through tours (NIT), environmental education workshops (EE), pro-eco gardens (PEG), kitchen farming (KiF) to ensure environmental sustainability and accountability. EPDA applies tools such as publications, sensitization campaigns, conferences, multi-level capacity strengthening, communication, organization/facilitation of stakeholder consultation processes among others to bring change.
EPDA collaborates with network and project partners in order to consolidate the spirit of working together. EPDA uses inclusive participatory approaches to implement its activities with partners and beneficiaries altogether helping it to work with a range of stakeholders.
